nonsense that we’d been hearing at church. I didn’t
really have my own opinion on gays, just accepted what I
was told. It was stupid and shortsighted of me.
Now I know better. I’m sorry that it took you leaving for
me to pay attention to things I should have noticed. How
you started avoiding the church functions that you used to
love. How girls never seemed to catch your eye.
After you left I realized just how much you’d pulled away
from us, and I’m sorry I was so blinded to it. I have no
excuses, except to say that you were always such a good
child I never worried about anything you did. Your older
brother caused enough hoopla all the time, that my
attention was usually on him, and when I thought of you
it was usually to thank God for having one boy who knew
how to behave!

Anyway, I know it’s not the same because I’ve had so
much time to think about it, but if I’d had the chance to
talk to you about this then, I like to think that this is what
I’d say.
I love you, Chase. Nothing you could ever do or say
would ever change how I feel about you. You’re my child,
and it’s my honor to be your mother, no matter who you
are. I will do anything in my power to help you deal with
the things you’re feeling.
Mr. West has told us about some of the things that
happened to you, and I want you to know that it doesn’t
matter. The things that were done to you aren’t your
fault. That despicable person took advantage of a lost,
lonely boy, and that was something you had no control
over, no matter how it feels to you.
It doesn’t change the fact that we love you and need to
see you as soon as you’re ready. It seems like Mr. West is
taking good care of you, and it makes me so happy that
you have him right now. I can tell he cares about you a
lot, and you deserve no less.
He said you’re going to therapy and that you’ve come a
long way in the time since he found you, and I’m so glad
to hear it.
Do what you have to, baby. Find the things that you need
to feel better, and your family will be here waiting when
you’re ready to come home.
Oh, by the way, our phone number is still the same, but
I’ve given it to Mr. West in case you forgot. You can call
me anytime, Chase. I can’t wait to hear your voice again.
Love,
Momma
Devon could feel the tears prickling at the backs of his eyes. It
was the perfect letter, and he could feel the sobs shaking Chase’s body as he cried, but the tears were different this time.
This time, Chase cried not only for what he’d lost, but also for
what he still had. Devon had a feeling he’d be seeing the Mackenzie

family again sooner than he thought. It made him happy for Chase, but
it also made him sad. He knew it was selfish of him, but he knew that
this was the beginning of the end of his time with the younger man.
